Rare

993335_706582949367874_1268413184_nI am very excited to announce that I am going to be writing a weekly column!  It will appear on the totally cool new conservative site Rare.us.  This is something that I’ve been interested in doing for a long time, and I’m glad to have found the perfect platform to express my point of view.

The thought of having to come up with an interesting topic to write about every single week is still a bit intimidating, but I am up to challenge.  There has been no shortage of people offering suggestions in the last couple of days!

You can already read my first piece on Rare.us.  I wrote about the emotional component in politics and the need for politicians to make a personal connection with voters.  I said –

We’ve seen it time and time again that the politician who makes a personal connection with people wins the election.  Sometimes we – especially conservatives – forget that there is an emotional component to politics.  It’s not just about presenting the best policies. It’s about showing people that you care about them and think about how every issue affects them.  The best politicians seem to have the right formula of part policy wonk and part Oprah.

Read the entire piece here. I hope you’ll read my column every week. I’d love to hear your feedback, so please make sure to comment – and share the link when you like it!

  1. Congratulations! I look forward to your weekly column. Just read your first entry.

You are exactly correct. It is not enough to have a better policy, you have to communicate that policy in a way that people understand you as if you were a guest in their home sitting at the dinner table and talking. You can’t just oppose, you have to propose, but in a common sense way with a human touch. As the old AT&T commercial noted, you have to “reach out and touch”. You never win if you can’t touch the heart or unwilling to show empathy.
