Politico reports that Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA) is behind an effort to convince Republican leaders to withhold campaign contributions from two openly gay Republican candidates for Congress – simply because they are gay. The candidates, Richard Tisei (MA-6) and Carl DeMaio (CA-52), represent two of the GOP’s best chances to pick-up seats currently held by Democrats in 2014.
Forbes is a senior Republican member of the House Armed Services Committee. He is a powerful man in Congress and the Party. His anti-gay actions speak loudly and do great damage to the Party.
This is an opportunity for Speaker of the House John Boehner to have his “Sister Souljah moment.” He should forcefully, personally, denounce Forbes and those who demonize gay people and oppose homosexuality.
It’s important to do because many Americans think that Republicans are out of touch with real life in 2013. Life in America in 2013 includes gay people – in every family and every circle of friends.
Frankly, Forbes effort to undermine Tisei’s and DeMaio’s campaigns is an attack on everybody’s family and friends. He is essentially making a statement to every American, “Your gay family and friends aren’t fit to serve in Congress – simply because of who they are.”
Boehner should personally make a strong statement. For the good of the Party – he should stand up for what’s right.
I doubt he will.
